UPI Glitch: Banks, Apps & Users Impacted—Here’s What’s Happening

NPCI’s Response to the Ongoing UPI Disruptions

Digital payments in India came to a standstill as UPI (Unified Payments Interface) services faced a major outage across the country. Users reported failed transactions, delayed fund transfers, and login issues while trying to make payments through Google Pay, Paytm, PhonePe, and various banking apps.

The UPI Outage: What We Know So Far

Reports of UPI failures started surfacing in the late afternoon, with complaints skyrocketing by evening. Users took to social media platforms to express their frustration, sharing screenshots of failed payments, pending transactions, and bank deduction issues.

According to Down detector, an online service monitoring platform, the outage primarily affected:

  • Google Pay – 72% users faced transaction failures
  • Paytm – 86% reported issues with payments
  • SBI (State Bank of India) – Fund transfers and mobile banking services were disrupted

How Are Users Affected?

With UPI being the backbone of India’s digital economy, millions of users faced inconvenience, especially small businesses and vendors relying on cashless transactions. From grocery payments to online shopping and even cab fares, the disruption brought financial activities to a halt.

Many users reported that their money was deducted from accounts but not credited to the recipient. Others were unable to log in to banking apps, while some received error messages stating, “UPI services are temporarily unavailable.”

What’s Causing the UPI Outage?

As of now, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates UPI, has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the disruption. However, experts speculate that a surge in transaction volumes or technical glitches in bank servers could be responsible.

Some possible reasons behind the issue include:

  • Server Overload – High transaction traffic could have crashed the system
  • Technical Glitch – A bug or security update could have caused the failure
  • Maintenance Downtime – Banks and payment apps might be updating their systems

What Should Users Do?

If you are facing issues with UPI transactions, here’s what you can do:

  • Check Your Bank’s Official Website or Social Media – Many banks update users about outages.
  • Avoid Retrying Transactions Immediately – If money is deducted but not credited, wait for some time; it usually gets refunded.
  • Use Alternative Payment Methods – Switch to debit/credit cards or net banking for urgent payments.
  • Keep Your UPI App Updated – Sometimes, app updates fix transaction issues.

When Will UPI Be Back?

There’s no official timeline for the restoration of UPI services yet. However, since NPCI and major banks are aware of the issue, a fix is expected soon. In previous instances, such outages lasted anywhere between a few hours to a day.
