UP Government Imposes Ban on Meat Sales Near Religious Places During Navratri

Stricter Meat Sale Restrictions in Uttar Pradesh During Navratri

With Chaitra Navratri 2025 approaching, the Uttar Pradesh government has issued a new directive banning the sale of meat within 500 meters of religious places. This move, aimed at preserving the sanctity of the festival, also includes shutting down illegal slaughterhouses across the state.

Stricter Rules on Ram Navami

While the ban will be in effect throughout Navratri, starting March 30, the government has announced even stricter measures on April 6 (Ram Navami). On this day, a total prohibition on animal slaughter and meat sales will be enforced, ensuring a spiritually pure environment for devotees.

Government Orders & Implementation

The Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Amrit Abhijat, has directed District Magistrates, Police Commissioners, and Municipal Commissioners to strictly enforce these regulations. To oversee proper execution, district-level committees have been established, led by District Magistrates and supported by officials from:

  • Police Department
  • Pollution Control Board
  • Animal Husbandry Department
  • Transport Department
  • Labour Department
  • Health Department
  • Food Safety Administration


These teams will monitor compliance and ensure that no illegal meat trade or slaughter activities take place near religious sites.

Government’s Stand on the Ban

The Yogi Adityanath government has emphasized that this directive aligns with previous orders issued in 2014 and 2017, which focused on stopping illegal slaughter and maintaining religious harmony. By reinforcing this policy, the government aims to respect the sentiments of devotees while promoting cleanliness and order in public spaces.
